Shandley Kane Dental extends the warmest welcome to our new patients! We are honored that you entrust us with your family’s dental and oral health needs. As a new patient, we understand you may have many questions about what to expect during your initial exam at our office in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. We’ve answered some of the questions that we typically get from those new to us, and of course, we invite you to contact us with additional and specific questions, too.
The need for x-rays is determined on an individual basis. The “timing” for x-rays depends on when you last had such images of your mouth and what we find during your oral exam. A full-mouth series of X-rays is generally valid for three to five years, while “bitewings,” or check-up x-rays, are typically done yearly to assess for cavities between teeth.
Due to advanced technologies and techniques, radiation exposure is minimized. In addition, our team has invested in digital radiography. These digital X-rays use special sensors instead of films and chemical processing techniques. This approach is associated with up to 80% less radiation exposure than traditional film-based radiography.
Your mouth does not exist in isolation from the rest of your body. We know that the health of your mouth can be affected by other diseases that seemingly have nothing to do with your teeth or gums. The same can be said of the medications and supplements you can take – they, too, can contribute to an increased risk of developing certain oral conditions. At every check-up, we will discuss any changes to your health. By staying on top of these changes, we can make recommendations that are in the best interests of your smile and overall health.
We encourage a comprehensive exam with the doctor first before scheduling a dental cleaning. During your first visit, we dedicate time to carefully assess and document your oral health condition. We also want to understand your goals and expectations regarding your dental care. Once we have had a chance to meet you and identify your unique needs, we can recommend the appropriate type of cleaning to make sure that your treatment needs are appropriately met. When you return for your cleaning, we will also take the time to discuss what we learned from your initial visit and answer any questions that you might have. Scheduling a separate cleaning appointment is intended purely to ensure that each new patient gets quality treatment and individually curated care.
If we discover any signs of damage or issues, we will provide you with treatment options. Those interventions could be as simple as tips and samples of oral care products designed to improve your brushing and flossing technique at home. They could also mean we must schedule a dental or periodontal (gum) service or treatment to stop the problem from progressing. With prompt treatment and regular visits like this, you can keep your teeth and smile intact for life.
