Types of dentures available at Shandley Kane Dental
When you hear the word “dentures,” you may envision the fake teeth of your grandparents slipping and falling out at the most inopportune moments. You may also remember their dentures looking extremely obvious as dental restorations and have thought you would NEVER consider dentures if faced with tooth loss.
Fortunately, dentures have come a long way over the years and look more natural than ever! They are also fabricated to last many years and fit and function better than their earlier counterparts. At Shandley Kane Dental in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, we welcome patients who have tooth loss and are considering their options for tooth replacement. We have several different varieties of dentures for patients to consider, allowing for choices to be made with the assistance of our experienced team of professionals.
What types of dentures are available?
At Shandley Kane Dental, we are pleased to offer several different types of prosthetic teeth for patients to consider. These include:
- Partial dentures. Partial dentures are made of a metal framework and use the existing teeth to support the restoration. This denture replaces one or more teeth using prosthetic teeth. The partial denture is custom designed to hook onto the supporting teeth for better stability and function.
- Full dentures. Full dentures are made of acrylic and replace all the teeth in the dental arch. They are held in with natural suction or denture adhesives.
- Implant-retained dentures. With a few dental implants placed along the dental arch, a denture can be fabricated to snap into place and restore the function and appearance of the smile with less fuss and worry. The implants enhance the retention and stability of the denture. These are also called “overdentures.”
- Implant-supported dentures. If you prefer an option that is not removable, multiple dental implants can also be utilized to support a fixed denture that screws directly into the implants. This provides a strong, stable, and beautiful result without having to take the prosthetic teeth out.
Which type of denture is right for my smile?
During an initial evaluation with Drs. Steven Shandley, Elizabeth Kane, and Colleen Shandley, you will be thoroughly evaluated to determine how many teeth need to be replaced. In some instances, if damage to the smile is severe enough, any remaining teeth may be removed before full dentures or implant-retained dentures are considered. Based on this examination, we can offer tooth replacement options and suggest the type of denture best suited for your unique needs.
