For our patients who have previously required antibiotic pre-medication prophylaxis prior to dental treatment procedures:
We want to inform you of changes implemented in our office regarding antibiotic pre-medication for dental appointments. The updated recommendation from the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Dental Association (ADA) is that antibiotic pre-medication is no longer regularly recommended for most patients who have had joint replacements or as a routine treatment for prevention of infective endocarditis in select cardiac compromised patients.
We request that you check with your physician or orthopedic doctor on YOUR specific need for pre-medication coverage for dental procedures. We would like a letter from them stating their recommendations on your continued need for antibiotic pre-medication. We will only be providing pre-medication prescriptions for patients that have a letter from their physician stating the need for antibiotic pre-medication protocol.
