Dental implants are a reliable and effective way of replacing missing teeth in a lasting, more permanent manner than dental bridges and dentures. However, they require oral surgery and several months to place and restore them. At Shandley Kane Dental of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, our team educates you on what to expect from the entire process. Drs. Steven Shandley, Elizabeth Kane, and Colleen Shandley work alongside patients to help decide if they are proper candidates for dental implants and prepare them for the steps needed.
What can I expect from my upcoming dental implant procedure?
When you schedule your oral surgery for dental implant placement, you will be given instructions on what to expect before, during, and after the procedure:
- Before. Before the procedure, our team will evaluate you during an appointment to ensure you are a proper candidate for dental implants. Dental implants require the patients to have sufficient bone to ensure that implant placement is successful. This is determined with X-ray imaging to evaluate the jawbone where the final dental implant will be placed. These images also help with the planning of implant placement into the jawbone. Before the procedure, patients will also be given proper sedation and anesthetics to ensure comfort during the surgery
- During. During the implant procedure, the dentist will create an incision into the gum tissues, which exposes the jawbone. Next, a hole is drilled into the bone where the implant will be placed. The dental implant appliance, which looks like a tiny metal screw, is then inserted into the hole and secured. Once in place, the incision in the gums is stitched up and allowed to heal
- After. After dental implant surgery, it is perfectly normal to experience some minor discomfort, including swelling and bruising in the treated area. These symptoms are usually well-managed with over-the-counter pain medication or prescription medications from your dentist at Shandley Kane Dental. You must follow all of the aftercare instructions provided closely, and continue to perform proper oral hygiene techniques, and avoid certain types of food. Our dental team will also schedule a follow-up appointment to check on the healing process, which occurs along with osseointegration–the growth of bone around the implant to stabilize it
How do I take care of my smile after dental implants are placed?
Dental implants do not require extra attention, so many patients can just continue caring for their smiles as usual. This includes brushing and flossing as directed, visiting the dentist regularly for evaluations, and monitoring for changes in oral health that may require further attention.
